Lady of the Broken Heart

Description

It started out as something completely different, and then decided to completely change into something else.... and then write itself a story to explain it. The story goes thus:

Nobody knows where this statue came from, but since even Old Man Benedict doesn't remember a time she wasn't there, that may be expected. She stands in the park near the pond on the east side, beneath an old oak tree. People used to call her the "Lady of the Broken Heart." Old Man Benedict still does. Nobody else has called her anything at all in nearly 70 years, but we all still know her. Every morning the police stop by her. Just to check. For the last fifty-someodd years, every so often, morning dawns and the hand that stands empty, out, as if to offer, or take something, is holding a heart. Fresh, still warm, and invariably human. Those mornings, the police know to look for a body. They don't always find one. Nothing connects any of the victims except time of death. Always close enough to sunrise that the heart is still warm when found, never close enough for anyone to see anything anywhere near the statue. ...Or for the statue to move. The official story from the police is that there is a local serial killer, or family of killers, that includes the statue as a part of their ritual. Locals mostly believe that might have been true, if it weren't ongoing for so long, but that, at this point, it's far more likely that the statue Herself is doing the killing.
